Department of Plant Protection

Agricultural Entomology, Plant Pathology and Plant Nematology are the units of this department.

Department of Agricultural Entomology

Department of agricultural entomology is the main department concerned mainly with crop protection. This mainly includes pest incidence evaluation, pesticidal information and information on cyclic pests and resistant varieties availability.

OBJECTIVES:

This department focuses mainly on crop protection aspects. The foremost objectives includes

  • Pest forecasting and information sharing with farmers
  • Identification of pest incidence symptoms and prescribing possible recommendations
  • Training on non-chemical control of pests

Apart from farm level support the department is mainly engaged in teaching. There is one laboratory and one field laboratory. Each laboratory can engage 50 students at a time.

Department of Plant Pathology

Plant pathology laboratory has various facilities like ELISA kit and smart PCR which enables the molecular research aspects of the students. The department also includes virology and bacteriology sections which will allow the scientists to identify the viral and bacterial diseases of the crops. It also consists of spectrophotometric and compound microscope which enables the students to cover the microscopic pathogens and fungal bodies. The laboratory is also enabled with automatic temperature recorder and deep freezer for preserving the samples. The various charts displayed outside the laboratory gives the glimpse of the symptoms and nature of damage of diseases on various crops, which gives the visual evidence for the farmers visiting the department.

Department of Nematology

Nematodes are most problematic in vegetable cultivating areas and polyhouse cultivation. They are the main limiting factors for cut flower cultivation under hi-tech horticultural system. This department is engaged in identification of nematodes, managing nematodes through effective and improved methods with resistant cultivars available.
