\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Since the dawn of civilization, man has tamed the wild to meet his ends; not just animals but plants as well and practically that was the point of time from where the practice of breeding started.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Plant Breeding provides the seeds of new high-yielding cultivars, which often include other desired traits that increase farming profitability and sustainability. Genetics made plant breeding a science-based approach for crop improvement that continues evolving due to increasing knowledge. Conventional cross breeding methods are now used along with tools ensuing from advances in omics and genetic engineering. The Division has equipped laboratory \/ field labs, bio visual charts with adequate equipment\u2019s to carry out both fundamental and applied research and provide options for undergraduate students to get adequate exposure in advanced molecular biological techniques.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Seed is the basic and critical input in agriculture compared to other inputs like fertilizers, pesticides and water. For the production of quality seed, processing, storage and marketing, the existing machinery in the state, need to be geared up for the scientific footing. Hence, in order to popularize the concept and uses of quality seed, the unit of Seed Science and Technology are coordinated in order to give growth and awareness among the students, to reach other communities like farmers. Major activities of Seed Science and Technology are teaching about the overview of seed, seed anatomy, and importance of quality seed, quality seed production technology of cereals, millets pulses, oil seeds, fibre crops and vegetable crops.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Post harvesting operation like threshing, winnowing, processing, storage\u00a0 are also\u00a0 important. Hence, on behalf of the unit of Seed Science and Technology, briefly explain about seed processing and its principles, Sequence of processing for different crops and grading of seed and the importance of post harvesting losses and how we can avoid. Seed certification, certification procedure (how can register the seed form) and seed testing for quality assessment are also taught. The importance of seed storage, conditions and packing materials used for safe storage of seeds are being well explained to the students.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Biochemistry department provides course in Introduction to plant Biochemistry (2+1) to the undergraduate students of B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture. The biochemistry department extended the research facilities like extraction and isolation of oil, Natural dye and secondary metabolites from herbal plants and insects. The department have Soxhlet extraction unit, thin layer chromatography (TLC), Column chromatography, UV chamber, Melting point apparatus and Hot air oven.<\/span><\/p>
