Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry

The Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry unit, is equipped with well-established laboratory facilities to accommodate  52 students with wide spacing at a time. The laboratory has been fully aided with the proper guidelines for students’ safety protocol. The unit helps the students to learn about soil and its relation to plants units practical approaches. This includes soil morphological studies and analysis, soil and landscape assessment, nutrient assessment and management, soil system modeling and soil information and interpretation. The laboratory is depicted with proper safety symbols besides the routine chemicals, glassware’s and instruments.

The external samples collected from (farmers, external people, etc.) of soil and water are analyzed with proper care and reported at a reasonable cost.

ACAR Fertility Status

Unit of Agricultural Microbiology

The universal recognition of microbes in daily life and more so in agriculture, led to the establishment of the Unit of Agricultural Microbiology at ACAR. Gradually, the department has evolved with the mandate of achieving academic excellence and research in Agricultural Microbiology. The department is well equipped with Compound Microscopes, Stereo Zoom Microscopes, Phase Contrast Microscope, Autoclave, Laminar Air Flow Chamber, Incubator cum Shaker, Digital Colony Counter, Centrifuge, pH Meter, UV – Spectrophotometer, Microbial Fermenter and Refrigerator. Availing these laboratory facilities and expertise of the faculty, the student Project is being proposed every year and as a result, the novel microbial strains are identified and its potentials explored.

Further, the department gained its importance due to the threat exerted to the beneficial soil microbiota and soil health on application of chemical fertilizers. So, the exploitation of beneficial microbes as bio-inoculants has become paramount importance in agriculture sector for their potential role in food safety and sustainable crop production. As an initiative, quality bio-inoculants such as Rhizobium, Azospirillum, Azotobacter, Phosphobacteria and Azolla are produced in the laboratory for large scale supply to local farmers. The department continues to create human resource in Agricultural Microbiology since its inception and supporting the farmers through supply of low-cost agricultural inputs connected with organic farming and sustainable agriculture.

The objectives of the laboratory are,

  • To impart scientific and technical knowledge in all domains of Agricultural Microbiology
  • Documentation of microbial diversity
  • Development of multifunctional bio-inoculant strains for enhanced plant nutrition and soil health
  • Training and Advisory Services to farmers on the usage of biofertilizers

Unit of Environmental Science

The Environmental Science in Agricultural System provides an educational foundation to prepare students for careers focused on environmental issues related to agriculture and horticultural production. The laboratory primarily serves to expose students to soil, water and air related environmental issues. Activities will include soil analysis, water analysis, solid waste management, composting, vermicomposting, wastewater treatment and biogas production. Environmental science laboratory  can accommodate 50 students at a time. In this lab there are sufficient glass wares and have surplus equipment’s like pH Meter, EC Meter, TDS meter, Hot air oven, Flame photometer, Visible spectrophotometer, Hot plate, Distilled water unit, Water Bath, Rotary Shaker, Binocular Microscope, BOD Incubator, Soxhlet apparatus Autoclave, Laminar air flow chamber
